On 16 August 1940, Sqn Ldr MacDonnell used Plt Off O'Meara's Spitfire to destroy one BF109E, a second as a probable, a third damaged, a half share in a He111 and a second damaged in action over Kent. Unfortunately, on his way to his home base at Hawkinge, he was jumped by a Messerschmitt, and forced to bale out.
